The Jury of the Research Awards of the International Association of the History and Civilization of Vine and Wine corresponding to the year 2001, after deliberating, agrees to grant the prize to the book : "EL RIOJA HISTÓRICO" because of its acheiving a historical recovery of the ancient tradition of the Rioja wine and particularly because of the interesting study referring to Denomination of Origin during its seventy - five - year existence. We must point out that it is a complete study on the different stages of grape and wine growing in the Rioja region where relevant aspects on grape growing are recovered as well as on the difficulties encountered in Rioja agriculture in order to make up a productive vine and wine growing region. The study is also outstanding because of its coverage of wine cellars and companies and it reviews, in an interesting way, the significance of the Denomination of Origin and its Regulating Council, not only within the Spanish vine and wine growing framework but also within a context of the international competition of good wines.
